The SPESSE-Environment Node is responsible for the delivery of a reputed, globally accredited Environmental Standards Certification Scheme that meets fast-changing marketplace requirements for government, development cooperations, private businesses and professionals.
With assistance from the World Bank, the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) is implementing the Sustainable Procurement, Environmental and Social Standards Enhancement (SPESSE). Project The SPESSE project aims to eliminate the inadequacies presently existing in Procurement and Environmental & Social safeguards implementations caused by insufficiently trained quality professionals in the sectors. Primarily, it will:
- Improve the quality and efficiency of social service delivery to promote social inclusion and
- strengthen governance and public sector management concerning Procurements, Environmental and Social issues.
SPESSE supports the rollout of both academic and professional capacity development programmes:
In partnership and collaboration with mandated central agencies in social standards practice, the SPESSE Project is providing resources for the development and implementation curricula Social Standards in Nigeria. This is in form of professionalisation and academic tracks which are custom-made and fit-for-purpose which are being delivered in a sustainable manner through Centers of Excellence established in six Nigerian Federal Universities. The SPESSE Project design also promotes collaboration with Nigerian public, private, academic and sector partners. The Project may also offer opportunities to non-Nigerians either through student exchange or direct involvement of international students. Improvements in Social Standards Practice (SSP) skills will improve governance and efficiency, enhance social inclusion and sustainability on public and private sector investments in Nigeria.
