About us

The Environmental Standards Certification Scheme is a flagship initiative of the Federal Government, developed under the Sustainable Procurement, Environmental and Social Standards Enhancement (SPESSE) Project, with support from the World Bank.

The Scheme is part of a bold national effort to address Nigeria’s long-standing gap in skilled professionals within the Procurement, Environmental, and Social (PES) sectors. Through this initiative, we aim to build a strong, competent workforce that can champion sustainability, compliance, and best practices across both the public and private sectors.

At the heart of this mission lies the establishment of six Centres of Excellence across federal universities in Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. These Centres serve as hubs for high-quality capacity building, delivering training and certification programs that are rooted in global standards and tailored to local needs.

In line with ISO 17024 standards, the Environmental Standards Node—domiciled in the Federal Ministry of Environment—has developed and now oversees the Environmental Standards Certification Scheme in close collaboration with stakeholders, policymakers, industry experts, and partners.
